California. What are you thinking? Maybe Disneyland, beaches, Universal Studios come to mind. Or, maybe sunshine, San Diego, Los Angeles? Well, there’s much more to California than this! In fact, Big Bear vacations come to mind. This little hideaway up north of Riverside in the San Bernardino National Forest offers the visitor many activities and amenities.

What can you do there? A lot, let me tell you! There are all kinds of watersports, hiking, biking, horseback riding, winter sports, summer events, wildlife viewing and bird watching. No, I’m not done, I just ran out of breath. Museums, we have those. Big Bear Vacation Rentals include cabins, condos, houses and campsites. Truly, there is something for every age group in your family.

Big Bear Lake is a four-season resort community in the San Bernardino Mountains, discovered in the 19th century, and built in the 20th. With twenty-two miles of shoreline, you won’t have to worry about tripping over other vacationers. You’ll be able to enjoy temps in the 80s during the summer and 50s during the winter.

Watersports include boating and sailing, fishing, swimming, waterskiing and jetskis are allowed as well. Try your hand at parasailing, too. Hey, you can even cruise the lake on a pirate ship!

Big Bear vacations aren’t complete without trying out the location throughout the year. In the winter the area becomes a sought after ski resort with Snow Summit and Bear Mountain ski areas. You can try your hand at skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing. The winter season is November through April. When coming in the winter, don’t forget to have snow chains handy for the car in case they are needed. Besides, the kids would love to be here just to build a snowman and drink some nice hot chocolate by the fire, don’t you think? Sledding, snow angels and snow tubing would be close seconds, I’m sure.

Wildlife abounds up here in the mountains. You can go eagle spotting, bird watching and wildlife viewing. You can also enjoy the scenery and geology of the area with hikes, bike rides, horseback riding and auto tours. From Castle Rock you can see the waterfalls and there are some interpretive trails you start off with from the Big Bear Discovery Center. Take some time out at night and gaze at the stars with your lover. You could even combine that with a scenic flight over the lake.

The mountain and lake aren’t the only places to spend your Big Bear vacation. The Moonridge Zoo is here, built for injured animals that cannot be returned to the wild. Annually hundreds of birds and animals are treated and rehabilitated for re-release, however. Big Bear Historical Museum will show the visitor exhibits dating back to the time of the Native Americans forward through the gold rush and ranching eras.

Annual events near your Big Bear vacation rental include Spring Air Fair, Open Sky Music Festival, July 4th Fireworks and Old Miners’ Days, International Film Festival and the Oktoberfest. When you’re finished with these events, stroll on through the village and check out all the distinctive shops and eateries. At the end of the day, when all is said and done, a relaxing night can be had sipping wine while watching the sun set or enjoy a sweet massage.
